Policy Framework, Regional Governance, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The AZA-102 module of the FAO-GFCM curriculum discusses policy foundations, regional governance frameworks, and the integration of the Allocated Zones for Aquaculture (AZA) concept with the UN 2030 Agenda (SDGs). The material focuses on the principles of Resolution GFCM/36/2012/1 regarding the integration of aquaculture into coastal spatial planning (ICZM/MSP), classification of suitability zones and environmental carrying capacity, transparency of stakeholder participation, legal certainty, and mandatory environmental impact monitoring (AZE and EMP). This module also differentiates the mandates of regional fisheries organizations (GFCM, SEAFDEC, IOTC, WCPFC, NACA) and maps AZA's direct contribution to the achievement of SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 1 (No Poverty).
